2018 Employment Trends

According to postings on online job boards, vacancies across Australia have continued to rise with the Australian Department of Jobs and Small Business reporting increased demand for skilled workers almost across the board.

Of Australia’s eight capitals, skilled vacancy increases were highest in Darwin (20.9%), Perth (15.5%), Brisbane (11.3%) and Melbourne (10.6%). In the general regencies, these rates were reported at Outback Queensland (59.5%), Goldfields and Southern Western Australia (24.7%), Far North Queensland (22.5%) and South West Western Australia (22.3%).

The government reports that online advertising for these positions has steadily increased in each of the past 16 months – the longest consecutive streak since March 2011. For January, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported 16,000 net new jobs. The most in demand positions were technicians and trades workers (an increase of 19.7%), machinery operators and drivers (14.3%) and managers (12.4%).
