Save by hiring a trainee, a win for youth and for business

Businesses say how much it costs them to train and employ young unskilled people.

The first question I ask is: “How did you get started and who gave you your chance to become a business person?”

For the past three months, I have been visiting a coffee shop every day. Each day I see customers who walk out not willing to wait until they are served.

I asked the manager: “Do you notice how many people walk out without being served?” He said: “I have no idea as I am so busy working.” I replied “Every week countless people walk out as the line is too long and as a result you are losing business”.

I said “Why don’t you put on a hospitality trainee for the first four hours every day and see if your trade increased?” The first thing he said is “We don’t have the time to train anyone”.

I said “That is a shame as do you know how much business you are losing”.  His offhanded reply was “Not that much.” Today again, I saw three people walk out without ordering anything.

I suggested to the café owner if he hired a part time trainee for four hours per day, it would actually work out to only cost $50 for those four hours.

If the customers placed an order totalling $30 once per hour equalling $120 over four hours towards potential business (not withstanding the lifetime value of that business lost over two years) it would equate to around $60,000 per year yet the trainee would only cost $12,500.

This does not include the potential of others who have walked out never to return.

It is difficult to place a value on providing an opportunity to a young person for a start in life, looking forward to realising their dreams and also gaining more business as your new employee will tell his or her friends and family to come and try out the place where they are working.

Simply on the extra income it is a winner and the rest of the equation priceless!
